The Sweet Smell of Roses

The rose bushes in my yard are beginning to bloom and man oh man do they smell, you guessed it, sweet. This was a fun picture to take. I was taking a picture of some of my other roses and looked over to see the setting sun shining right on this little beauty. I couldn't resist. I set my camera to spot metering to give it the dark background and shot away. 50mm, f/2, 1/2500 sec, iso100.

CC welcome.

You already know that I love this one! I can't think of any CC... it's pretty much perfection. :)

I do have a question... did you spray it with water? I love the drops, but I'm thinking with a setting sun it wouldn't be dew...

This is absolutely beautiful, one question... how do you do the spot metering? Is it a mode on SLR's? I love the dark background...simply gorgeous.

Gorgeous photo! It's especially striking when you blow it up to get the full impact. I'm a sucker for water on plants, and this one is beautiful.

I like this as it; that said, you could try cropping more of the dark from the top of the photo so the center of the rose (and I assume the focal point) is closer to that rule of thirds sweet spot.

Great job!

Teri-I know in SLRs you can choose between matrix or zone metering, center-weighted metering or spot metering. I think quite a few point and shoots give you the same option. My husband figured out how to change it on his. You can always check your manual.

For a bit more info on metering modes check out

Hope that helps!

Great job capturing the detail and I love the water droplets! The rose looks like it's just jumping out of the picture. Great job, Brittney!!!

great job. You all have to click on it to make it bigger because in this case bigger is better for sure! Love the shot!
