Vintage Madame

This is my oldest Madame Alexander Doll- she represents Norway, in honor of my hubby's family. I added the flowers for texture but after about a billion and two pictures I still wasn't quite happy with the turn out. I wanted the texture of the flowers and the doll together but I kept losing one or the other. I'm really struggling with aperture settings on my D40x- any tips?

Settings:
f/5.6
shutter 1/125 sec
iso 100

PS- PW colorized action at low opacity with edge burn

PLEASE CC- I really want to learn!

Very classic! It reminds me of a porcelain French doll I have from my great-grandmother.

I like that the flowers are old and dried out and vintage-y on their own, but I don't think that the flowers work well with the doll. Maybe it's the bright red on the doll's dress. For CC I would say that I would have gone with one or the other, unless the dress colors were more faded and subdued.

I love the doll, and mayvbe the coloring of the flowers take away from the pretty colors in the dress. Vintage doesnt have to be dark/.....great pic....also maybe use the flowers as a texture.....?

Teryn, I like your picture. I think you did a great job with the lighting. What about aperture are you having issues with? I'm not familiar with the D40x, but if you'd like to email me with any questions, I'll do my best to help you out.

I thing the picture together is okay. I thing the doll by herself would have been amazing, or making her match to the colors of the flowers so that they don't distract from the dolls face. Beautiful doll...and great lighting.

Hey I wonder what it would look like if you put the doll in front of the flowers and zoomed out just a touch. Just curious. Either way the flowers to add something to the pic, nice job!

I probably would've done the doll without the flowers, but it never hurts to try everything! What about aperture are you struggling with? I really like a wide open aperture (lowest number) for most shots. My best advice would be to experiment like crazy! ;)

You guys are so right. I kinda looks like 2 seperate pictures being stuck together side by side. I will try some more coloring options- B&W/Sepia and what not. Thanks so much!
